I have a few friends that no longer go to the movies. They wait for a movie to come out on Blu Ray or DVD. They have HDTVs and say it as good as going to the movies. I like having a wide screen tv, but I still prefer going to the movies. Has having an HDTV stopped you from going to the movies, or at least lessened the amount of times you go?

For the most part I usually wait for a movie to come out on DVD/Blu Ray, however, there are those movies that give you a total different experience in a movie theater than what you'd get at home.
If you have a nice setup at home with surround sound, or projector/100" screen or bigger and surround sound, then going to a theater may not be important at all. If you only have an HDTV w/tv speakers the full impact of a movie won't be completely felt IMO. I think it was Brian that said a few shows back that you have to watch Cloverfield in a theater, because you wouldn't get the full experience at home. That was true. The sound for me is what really immerses you in the experience, then its how the movie looks.

Directors film motion pictures with the idea that you will watch them in a theater. Primarily, they film for the giant size of the screen. Cloverfield has a huge monster walking over the city and the folks are running under it. It's a shaky-cam fest, but with a large screen you see smaller details you can't make out on a small TV. (Even if that TV is considered large) You also feel small yourself, because the Monster is now 30 feet tall and not 30 inches. It's a bit more terrifying in that sense. The human brain perceives things differently when they are larger.
It's splitting hairs though, because most movies aren't spectacles. They are stories that have the luxury of being filmed. You don't need to see Superbad in the theater.
So I like to watch high-action or really high budget pictures in the theater, but most everything else I will rent.
At the same time, however, if you have a projector and a very large movie screen, there is no benefit to going to the theater. But the screen would have to be at least 15 feet tall. Otherwise, you aren't really seeing the film the director intended you to see.
I'd say 95% of movies, it doesn't matter. But I know I'd prefer to see things like Aliens and Saving Private Ryan in the theater over someone's uber TV setup any day. Sticky seats and all.

I'm kinda in the same boat as Kevin, only super big budget movies I'll see in the theatre. I have a decent set up at home with a 50" plasma and 5.1 surround. But it seems lately with the high prices at the movie theatre and gas to get there, I just seem to wait now. Plus movies are out on DVD 3 months after the release it seems. I might go see Eagle Eye though next week.

Like already mentioned, I like big budget action movies in the theater. I also like good comedies because you have the group laughing and stuff, its just a fun atmosphere. But romantic comedies or dramas or just dumb comedies I can watch in the privacy of my own home.

I agree with the above about seeing big budget movies in the theatre. I almost didn't see 300 in the theatre when that came out. I've become so picky with movies lately. I'll only go if I think the movie is going to be really good. Otherwise, I'll wait until I can rent it on AppleTV. I'd only buy a Blu-ray movie if I already know that it's good, like Iron Man, for instance.
