We
Canucks are sick of hearing about your damn American election :P It
takes way too long and ruins television and news for like 8 months.
Bet you didn't know there's a Canadian election happening. It was
announced only a couple weeks ago and will be held October 14th. We
just git 'er done, don't waste too much time with the whole soap opera
style campaign thing.
Anyhow, just thought I'd poll the forum on their stance. If you were
(or even are) Canadian, who would/will you vote for Prime Minister:
1) Stephen Harper
2) Stephane Dionne
3) Jack Layton
4) Jacques Poutine
5) Don't give a fuck.
Now that you've considered your options, I should point out that in
Canada, we don't actually vote for a Prime Minister. We vote to elect a
member of the House of Commons to represent our local riding. That member is attached to a political party and then the party
who takes the most seats in the House of Commons is asked to form a
government. The leader of that party is appointed Prime Minister and in
fact is a member just like everyone else in that they represent their
own riding/voting district just like all other members. Technically
speaking, the leader of the party could lose in their own riding and
end up not even elected period, not even as a member of the house; but that would never
happen, since they tend to run in their strongest area of support.
This moment in Canadian politics brought to you by Dan4Real. - "I approve this message."

As prosperity sets in with the good Canadian economy and the high oil prices, it appears many Canadians are turning to right wing politicians in-order to lower taxes and reduce the size of your Government. Likely they wanted to form this Government and have an election before Obama becomes the U.S. President and starts making leftest influences on Canada. Not to say Canada makes these decisions based on what happens in the United States, but I doubt the Rights wanted to delay it longer than need be.

Yeah that's part of it. Also, we don't have a 2 party system in Canada. Essentially, there are 4 parties: Conservative, Liberal, New Democrats, and Bloc Quebecois.
Because of this system, there is the posibility for minority governments (when a party doesn't hold 50% of the seats in the House). This means parties must align and work together to pass legislature, since its impossible to pass a bill with your own party alone.
We've now had a Conservative minority government for 2, 1/2 years - the longest standing in our history, but frankly, cooperation was starting to dwindle with the other parties and the support for the Liberals (the next biggest party in terms of seats in the house) was at a low.
Harper, our Conservative Prime Minister, thought the time was as good as it ever would be to go for a majority government, and so he called an election. I'm sure the American election certainly factored into his decision making process, as priorities may change after a new president is elected...
I just find it funny that Canadians know/care so much about whats going on in American politics but Americans generally know/care so little about Canada. We are one another's biggest trading partners and our countries economies are fairly intertwined. I would bet that most Americans don't know that Canada has the second largest oil reserves in the world next to Saudi Arabia. If you don't believe me just wiki the Alberta Oil Sands.
Both Obama and McCain say they want to lower their reliance on foreign oil, but this generally tends to make people think "lower our reliance on the middle east's oil." Canada has lots of it and we are your friends and neighbors! Just wait till we tap into the resources we are currently surveying in the Arctic...

While it is true that Canada supplies most of our oil. It's not Light Sweet Crude. LSC is the stuff that you basically pour in your car. And most of that does come from the gulf. Canada's oil goes to every other thing we use oil for. But when it comes to cars, that "generally" comes from Saudi Arabia.
The problem though, is that we need a lot of energy, and the prices are too volatile and easily manipulated by National Governments that control their oil. The problems with Russia and Venezuala are partially due to the fact that the high price of oil has given them a lot of money to spend on bothing us. And our economy is at the mercy of their Government's desire to switch off the pump. Sure, we could still get oil from Canada and Mexico, but oil is traded on the world market and any cut in supply costs us major dollars.
We need energy independence. Not so much so we can say, "We don't want your oil." Because we'll never have a battery operated jet. But rather, so we can have an alternative energy source if oil becomes too expensive.
I don't think people in the United States understand the American political system. Let alone Canada's. People really think the President has power over domestic policy. They don't understand congress at all. I mean, look at the bailout thing going on. They are working on it in Congress. The President can't do shit to fix it. The Democrats blame Bush for doing nothing and creating the problem. But everyone can see right now, with their own eyes, that the Democrats are the ones being tasked to fix it in congress. Congress makes the laws and handles domestic policy. But most people think the President is king. You elect Obama or McCain and they can do whatever they want. There is no understanding that this isn't how it works here.
If you asked people on the street who Nancy Pelosi was. They would maybe know. And then if you asked what her title was. Maybe 1 out of 10 people would know it's Speaker of the House. Then ask that person, "Is she a Senator?" And I bet they'd say "Yes." Because people are dumb-asses in this country.
Be happy your Canadian system is so complicated. It shows your people care about how it works. And stop voting for the Green party. I saw them on TV when I was in Canada, and they look like a bunch of asshats.
