So Sirius...

.25 cents a share.  Ouch.

4 billion in losses.  Ow!

22% of the staff being let go.  Yikes!

  Will they survive?  Hmmm...

Subscribers are up.
Merger is done.
They "only" have 211 million in debt on 650 million in revenue.

But they can't dilute the stock much more.  It sounds like next quarter they'll be talking bankruptcy and/or hoping for a buyout.

Stern could be out of a job.

A strictly Led Zeppelin only channel? Stuff like that is probably why Sirius is going out of business.

Agreed.  When I first got Sirius I listened to Area 33  (Now just called Area)  They had D.J.'s on and they each played different stuff.  Then sometime last year they cut the DJ's and just repeated the same music endlessly.  With a new cut here and there.  The lack of personality was awful.

I'd cancel, but my girlfriend listens to Howard so I keep it for her.  I keep thinking I'll use it on a long drive or something, but that never happens.  I always throw the iPod or Zune on and catch up with music podcasts that I'm subscribed to.

As soon as 4g becomes standard.  Regular radio and Sat radio are finished.

For instance, we have this Sports radio station in Cleveland that has an odd transmission rule imposed on it by the FCC.  After the sun sets, they have to lower their wattage to something that barely clears the city of Cleveland.  However, they also stream their show on the Internet.  So I can get this show on my iPhone.  And I can pause it, etc.

Yes, cell phone has some drops here and there in a dead zone, but mostly it works fine.  And when 4g takes over and gives everyone high speed for less money.  Be prepared to embrace the Internet car stereo.

When do you think 4g will be standard? About 2 years?

The g stands for Generation.  3g is third generation wireless.  Which is basically less than a T1 speed of 1.5 megabits per second.  Where as 4g will be T1 and above.   I imagine 5g will be closer to your 802.11g wireless speeds.

When do I think 4g will be standard?  Well it's being rolled out now with Wimax integration from the new Intel/Sprint/Comcast deal with Clearwire.   It'll be a bigger deal now that the 700mhz frequencies have been opened up.  As soon as the TV's stations go dark next year on those frequencies we should start seeing new longrange WiFi products hit using this band.

I'd say if you are lucky, you can get Wimax now and be doing 4g for $30 a month.  Which is pretty sweet.  I'd say a year from now it'll be pretty good nationwide.  Better than where T-Mobile's 3g network is now.

The rollout has been taking baby steps over the past two years.  It finally has traction now and major cities are getting it all the time.  Go to www.clearwire.com to see where they are already at.

Do you think these will ever be fast enough to game on?

You can fully game on 4g.  4g Clearwire stuff is just like having Internet in your home.  Obviously because it's wireless you have to be aware of some interference and obstruction.  But it's very fast and you can game on it.  Not that I would think that it would be tournament worthy.  Obviously all wireless connections have more lag than a wired connection.  But it's still casually playable.  In Clearwire markets people use Wimax as their dedicated home Internet.  It's not better than cable and DSL but in the case of a Clearwire market, you can take your laptop anywhere in town and it'll work.  You can even watch streaming video.

Just wait until those 700mhz bands release too.  Those are great because the lower the frequency the farther and easier they can travel.   It'll be like having Wifi speeds with considerable range increases with less impact from walls.

This is all coming in a big way next year.  Where Wimax is out now in some markets.  Maybe even yours.  But the hardware is really coming online now.  It won't be unusual at all to get a laptop with built in Wimax support soon.  Some are already out.  Intel is pushing it like they pushed Centrino.

Seriously expect Steve Jobs to come out and some point and talk about how slow 3g is and how all MacBooks and iPhones will support WiMax or one of the 700mhz technologies within the next two years.
