At least with new EA games you don't need the disc to play anymore. I just noticed with red alert 3 that it no longer does the disc checking because you're always online. So yeah the DRM sucks, but I like not having to keep my discs out just to play.

And yes I realize that cracks have existed forever but this is different.

I think they'll take out a patch to unlock the thing for normal use in that case. It happened with some other high profile game too (forgot which one). Once the company had achieved their retail targets, they sent out a patch to unlock all the copy protection and all that.

Yeah, well you enjoy your DRM then.  I'll stick to using game cracks so that I don't have to use something I paid good money for the way some suit thinks I should.

I was just saying that it's nice to not have to put the disc in AND I don't need a crack. Nothing more, nothing less. I wasn't defending it or anything. Honestly I was just mentioning that I noticed I didn't need the disc to play after starting it up with my Gamecenter CX dvd in the drive and not red alert.

The reality: EA won't just turn off the servers and make it unplayable. Aint gonna happen. More than likely we'll see the authorizations go away in a year via a patch. That's what happened with Bioshock which everyone conveniently forgot about.

Re: Yeah DRM sucks but...

i bought that sid meiers pirates game when it came out 4-5 years ago
it was the remake one for the PC

i figured it wasn't popular enough to get pirated so i'd preorder and buy it. they were cool and gave me a collector's edition for the same price. brought it home and installed it but it kept bitching about a nero burning rom .DLL file. found out that the DRM software in there didn't like the fact that i had CD burning software installed on my computer even though nero will not break copyright schemes on media. so i figured i could uninstall software that i needed to use just to play a game or i could take the game back. i brought it back and got WoW instead.

about a year later someone had cracked the game and uploaded it so i downloaded it and installed it. worked like a fucking charm.

the point of the story is that DRM does not stop piracy. it hurts sales and costs the company money to license and implement such technologies. and if these DRM schemes ruin your PC due to their invasiveness there is rarely any tech support provided.
the guys who download the game illegally have a better time than those who bought it legally. read some of brad wardell's blog posts, hes the CEO of stardock software. he complains about the DRM on the games he buys too. ran into a similar problem where a game just wouldn't work because of the DRM.

pirates remove the limitations while people who stick with DRM are limited in how they can play the game.
