Wii music flopped so whats next?
|
|
|
Wii Music is already off the weekly top 10 in Japan and so far has only sold 81,000 copies in America. It completely bombed. So what will Nintendo do next?
Wii Fit 2?

The writing was on the wall for Wii Music quite awhile ago. With everyone playing along with Rock Band and Guitar Hero, there's virtually no audience that wants to play along with MIDI music.
That said, knowing Nintendo, it'll appear in their Greatest Hits category.

Guitar Hero didn't do very well either. It wasn't in the top 10 so it didn't sell over 190k on any single platform. Rock Band 2 however sold 360,000 in September when it was only on the 360.

Bad news Kevin. Guitar Hero ended up selling over 500,000 copies. :(

They probably thought they were at a point to where they didn't need good marketing for Wii titles like that anymore. Like a hershey's bar. How often do you see commercials for those? Never, and yet they still sell.

The main problem with Wii Music is the fact it's even less of a game than Wii Fit or anything else they have put out. You literally wave the Wiimote around and make sounds. There's no way to lose. There's no game. I'm all for making a fool of myself playing video games, but at least give me some challenge or some type of scoring system I can use as an excuse to keep playing (and not just some random mini games here and there).

I think deep down they realize that Wii music lacks what Wii Sports and Wii Fit have. Even though both of these games are pretty lacking, they are still fun, have scoring, and give you incentive to keep playing. Wii Music doesn't have anything like that and it's over simplicity is obvious. It's a perfect example of what happens when the casual game idea is taken to far.
I hope Nintendo can learn from the last 9 months of this year.
Right now, as I Wii owner I'm not to fond of Nintendo.
They've failed to deliver any serious holiday lineup with decent hardcore or casual games. I liked Wii Fit and I liked Wii Sports, I also liked Metroid Prime 3 and Super Mario Galaxy. I realize these specific games can't come out every year, but hopefully Nintendo can balance between casual and hardcore games, and their overall release schedule, alot better in the future. Hopefully this year just shows growing pains for the company and they come out with some crazy cool stuff for 2009.

I wouldn't be surprised if this time next year Wii Music was at 2 million.
That aside I have read a number of reviews out of curiosity on Wii Music and the consensus seems to be that the midi like music quality and the set list are the main sources of the games problems.
I think with some serious work Wii music could end up being an interesting thing to mess around with. But that's probably not going to be for a while.
