Anyone remember...

There are a few PC games that I remember playing as a teen that i thought rocked.  They were all made by lucas arts: The Day of the Tentacle, Monkey Island series, and The Dig.  I remember really enjoying these and am very surprised that these franchises haven't been used since then.  Do you guys think that side scrolling adventure are dead?  Blizzard is making Diablo 3.  Why not re-imagine these franchises.

Telltale games have been doing the new Sam & Max games which have been pretty successful I think. So there must be a place for adventure games somewhere.

I actually did a review on a book called Rogue Leaders : The story of Lucasart games or something. It's up in the review section you can check it out.

I'm a big fan of the old style 2d side scrolling platformers/RPG's and anyother genre like that like vertical shooters and stuff as well as Adventure games. Recently picked up and got through Full Throtle. Great game.

Maniac Mansion?

Anyway, Lucas abandoned the adventure titles.  I think the last title with any real dollars in it was the Blade Runner game.  After that, adventure gaming from big publishers went the way of the warrior.

But Nutman is right, Sam and Max is out and does well.  You should look there.

I played Sam and Max hit the Road a long time ago and loved it.  As soon as I get some time I will check out the new one.  I heard it is episodic.  And yes Kevin, it was called Maniac Mansion.  Not sure why I thought it was Day of the Tentacle. Full Throttle was awsome!

Day of the Tentacle was the sequel to Maniac Mansion.  : D

I remember renting MM on the Nes just so I could try and blow up the hamster in the microwave.  Good times.

I used to love playing these point and click adventure games. The first one I got into was Full Throttle. I still want a sequel to that game. Also Monkey Island was also really good. I know Grim Famdingo got a lot of good press but I wish they would let me use the mouse instead of forcing me to use the keyboard.

I have the same problem. I got grim fandango like a year back and it's just insane to try to play it with the keyboard.

It is a shame that these types of games fell off of the map.  This type of game usually had a very good story.  It would be awesome if Sierra (not sure if they are even around anymore) came out with a new Kings Quest game.  With todays graphics and a fully fleshed out story, I could see these adventure type games coming back.  I have all but stopped PC gaming because of the repetition in genres.   Seems like the only  thing available to me is either a FPS or an RTS.  If it wasn't for WOW I probably would not game on my PC.  And that is a very sad thing for me because I started gaming not with a console but a PC.
