I stand corrected about Star Ocean 4.

Sigh. Another reason for me to get a 360. The only reason I'm not selling it right now is that it's a 60gb. If I had an 80 or 40gb, I'd have sold it and bought a 360 by now.

And I consider myself a pretty big Sony fanboy.

It just seems like they're doing their best to alienate people.

God damn it Nutman.  I just went and had a look at the comparison games list for both.  If it wasn't for MGS4 and LittleBigPlanet, I'd just dump the PS3 altogether.  I didn't realise so many games I thought were exclusive are actually multiplatform.

I think Kevin's been saying that "Sony is gonna die" for about 3 years, even though the PS3 outsold the 360 worldwide in Q2 while the 360 got a price cut and the PS3 doesn't seem to be getting one anytime soon.

Yep, it's over.

Microsoft would go into debt if they tried to buy Sony...or Yahoo right about now. Apple should buy Sony and dominate all media and electronics, but I highly doubt Apply makes a purchase for anything over $5 billion.

I'd see Sony selling off parts and merging with Nintendo or maybe even Samsung before they get bought out by an American company, but I've seen stranger things.

More likely they'll merge with someone like Toshiba or another electronics company.

They'll never merge with Samsung - Korean company. The Japanese are too xenophobic for something like that to happen.

And it's not over for the PS3 but I wish they'd get their fucking act together and get some fucking RPGs. Seriously.

Re: Is it over for the PS3?

Why sony has not been "trying" harder - After they "defeated" Toshiba in the format wars, they and their fanbase were so excited, PS3 owners saw this as a victory over the xbox 360 and couldn't wait for Microsoft to shutter the doors on that division. Unfortunately people only bought a few more PS3s following this event and that quickly ended a month later. Sales of bluray have flattened out and Sony hasn't figured out why even though HDTV prices have fallen so much.

The North American Market - Its no secret that the 360 sells better in north america and generally poor in other regions of the world... until this year it seems. While sony has dominated sales between it and the 360 in nearly every other region outside of NA the deep price cuts from MS and the plethora of big titles for the 360 are pulling in the sales. While previously games were made for the japanese market and then exported to NA it is now a different story altogether. Studios are seeing the value of the North American market. More 360s sold worldwide than the PS3 and the fact that 360 owners tend to buy more games than a PS3 user would are all very attractive to the industry. We're a dominating consumer region for games now, just look at all the japanese RPGs being made for the 360 that would once be considered illogical to do. Look at the top selling game for the two consoles: Motorstorm (3mil sold as of dec 07) VS Halo 3 (8mil as of jan 08). High priced games are selling better on the 360.

Its all about the money they have, not could have in 4 years - MS had tens of billions sitting in their savings account up until recently when they decided to buy back their stock and boost dividends to share holders. Sony on the other hand is one broke motherfucker that needs to start paying its bills better. Seriously though, Sony is in financial trouble on a number of fronts and gaming isn't a cash cow for them. When bluray won the playstation forums were flooded with cheers and support for the victory. Many fanboys talked about how by 2012 sony will have sold more consoles than the 360. 2012!?!??!!??! By then sony will have lost so much money that they will have to sell some of their video game IP or just cancel video game studio projects. Not to mention all the other arms of Sony that would need trimming. MS is a very stable financially secure company, even if the 360 fails (which it can't be by too much at this point) they could continue to build on the brand they've built up now and push out a nextgen model later on. Sony would have to seriously think about supporting the PS2, PS3, PSP and the possibility of a PS4 all at the same time with their 10 year lifespans. So either sony bites a cash bullet the size of a skyscraper and losses billions more on PS4 or watches as the 360 takes over the nextgen market even earlier this time around.

The online & the achievements - Sony once said that gamers didn't want to play their consoles games on the internet. Soon after the xbox (original) came out and sony soon announced a modem attachment for the PS2. Rumors swirled around the PS3 having an achievements system. Despite fansites for the console being quite favorable to this they (sony) denied this was coming and claimed gamers didn't want such a feature. I've never seen sony fans so mad at their product maker before. Now sony has added Trophies. Sony is also chastised by their own fans for having weaker online infrastructure and support. I've got friends who have PS3 but they dont' play together for some reason. Microsoft doesn't do right very often by me but their keyboards, mice and 360 are shining examples of how they not only do well but set the bar in that area.

The PS3's and Sony's future are inextricably linked as I see it. Sony would never sell the playstation brand to anyone under any conditions. So if the company fails, the playstation brand will disappear forever. No question in my mind. Recessions hit consumer products hard and sony stuff isn't very cheap. Their other products lack any uniqueness in a market full of clones like PCs, TVs, mp3 players, cell phones, etc so I don't see their sales improving at all for any of their brands. They'll suffer a lot and make loads of cuts, they may even sever some arms but people will lend to them, they're sony and they can probably make it through this in better condition than many others. But a takeover is STILL in the cards I say.

It's worth mentioning that the Xbox 360 price cut didn't hit until the last month of the quarter and during the middle of that month. The PS3 sold 2.4 million and the Xbox 360 sold 2.2 million.

Sony is definitely in trouble though. While PS3 sales were good all the benefits from them were completely wiped out:
--
Sony Corp.'s quarterly profit plunged 72 percent as a surging yen wiped out the benefits of strong flat-panel TV and PlayStation 3 sales, as well as box office revenue from the movie "Hancock."

Sony said Wednesday it posted a net profit of 20.8 billion yen ($214 million) for the July-September period, down from 73.7 billion yen a year earlier. Sales in the fiscal second quarter slipped 0.5 percent to 2.072 trillion yen ($21.4 billion).

Sony makes about 80 percent of its sales overseas and is vulnerable to fluctuations in exchange rates. A rising yen erodes the overseas profits when converted into the Japanese currency.

"We already expect a poor performance for the Christmas shopping season," Chief Financial Officer Nobuyuki Oneda told reporters. "On how things will fare after Christmas, I can only say we will continue to keep a careful look."

Just last week, Sony slashed its full-year earnings projection, citing weaker consumer demand and a stronger yen. For the fiscal year through March 2009, it is expecting a 150 billion yen ($1.5 billion) profit, down 59 percent from the previous year, on 9 trillion yen ($92.8 billion) sales, up 1 percent on the year.

The only Japanese products you can buy in Korea are Playstations.  Pirated software for PS and XBox is rampantly sold in stores all over Korea.  I've never seen anyone with a Gameboy or DS in Korea and I'm sure any Japanese car would be smashed to bits if it was parked in public overnight.

Samsung bailing out Sony is like Iran selling nukes to Israel.  Don't see it happening.

The last time I was there (about a year ago), the DS had gone legit and was available in stores everywhere - Korean department stores included - as was the 360. They're really trying to stamp out the old days of rampant software piracy. Of course, you can get an R4 at Yongsan if you know where to look. It's not difficult.

Sony products in general are more availble now in Korea. I got my Sony camera in Daegu and it's legit.

Yeah, that really wasn't my best post.  Korea has changed a lot since I lived there almost 10 years ago.  I do stick to my guns though that Korea and Japan do not play nice - I'm sure Sony would take a lower bid from Nintendo to save face before joining Samsung.

I think LBP is the game Nintendo wishes they could develop for their innovative hardware.  If Nintendo doesn't want to gobble LBP up like it did Sonic, I'm sure they will 5 or ten years from now.

Oh hey, don't get me wrong - on that point, I agree 100%. There's no way Sony would take an offer from anyone but a Japanese company if they were in trouble. It's all about pride.

While not Sony, the fact that I mentioned Panasonic in this thread buying them and then having this unfold showcases the heart of the issue, and how dangerous Sony's position is right now.  While this will keep Panasonic from buying them (Sony are too expensive for ANYONE to buy right now, the stock has to fall to around $10 a share to make it tasty) in the near future.  That doesn't mean someone else with equally deep pockets won't.

Panasonic Buys Up Sanyo, Makes Japan's Biggest Electronics Co

It's been tentative for a while, but the Nikkei is reporting that Panasonic and Sanyo have come to an agreement, and Pansonic's buying up Sanyo. The actual act should be completed by April next year, and will result in one mega-corporation with revenues over ¥11.2 trillion (around $1.1 billion)—sounds like enough money to build quite a few mega-robots, or at least several mega-TVs. As part of what will be Japan's biggest electronics company, Sanyo won't be disappearing as a brand though, and Panasonic apparently intends to retain most of Sanyo's employees. [Bloomberg]

Indeed. Sony has fallen quite far. They used to be the world's biggest electronics company and then Samsung stole that away from them. Now they aren't even Japan's biggest electronics company.
