Surprise! Miyamoto's getting an award.

How many does he have now? They make a good point though. He  is the Walt disney of videogames in a sense.

It's almost time for this years "Nite To Unite for Kids" dinner, the ESA Foundation's annual fund raising event for children's charities. The event honors members of the industry who have made a great impact on the lives of children with the ESA Champion Award, with past recipients including George Lucas, Dan DeMatteo of GameStop, Nintendo's Howard Lincoln, ad Sony's Ken Kutaragi. Fixing a grave oversight, this year's recipient is the "Walt Disney of electronic gaming", Shigeru Miyamoto.

Did Miyamoto come up with Waluigi?  And shouldn't that automatically disqualify him from any award?

Ok...I had to look it up.  Camelot developed Mario Tennis on the GCN, which was his first appearance.  Sorry if I offended Miyamotosan.

You know, it's hard to say whether it was really Miyamoto's doing or Nintendo's insatiable appetitie to rehash everything over and over again that made the Nintendo characters what they are.  Most any other developer would have moved on.  I mean, whenever they give Miyamoto a chance to do something new, he doesn't create a new character, he does Wii Fit or Pikmin.  It's not like he drew the Pikmin guy either, that was Nintendo's art department.

I'm saying he's important, but I dunno about Walt Disney.  Nintendo is like Disney, yes.  Miyamoto is just a fruity game designer with a big fat wallet.

I wouldn't be surprised if he actually did design the pikmin and the main character since he was originally hired as an artist at Nintendo, and the entire premise of the game was his idea.

Yes well that's what they want you to believe.  But from what I hear, he just passes along goofy notes and the developers translate them into something like a game.

The guy deserves credit to some extent, I'm not saying he doesn't.  But would he really have made 1000 games featuring the same characters if Nintendo didn't drive him to do it?  I dunno...  I kinda doubt it.

You know, Miyamoto wasn't paid shit until magazines and websites starting talking about how great he is.  There's been much talk that Nintendo pretty-much shafted him in the early years, and only when they realized he might jump ship did they start pouring on the cash to keep him.  Before that, he was just a working stiff who tried to keep from getting a REAL job.

Whatever...  It's not like Walt Disney is some great guy either.  Without the Disney company marketing all his shit to death, you wouldn't even know who he was.  I think the lesson here, is that if you're compared to Walt Disney, it means your stuff is overhyped.

Charles Schultz...  There was a guy who deserved a lot of credit.  His cartoons from the 60's are still on TV during holidays.  That's crazy.  I'll be on my death-bed and Charlie Brown Christmas will be on TV.  (Yes I plan to die on Christmas Eve.)

Just saying...  You may all return to Miyamoto worship now.
