what conversion software you use kevin?
|
|
|
im looking to convert some anime fansubs that are in a MKV container with h.264 video with Ogg theora audio to something that a PS3 can play. They have subtitles with them, which are not built into the anime but separate that you would have to turn on in the player you are using.
now kevin, can the program you use do what i need it to do? if not, do you (or anyone else) have any suggestions of programs that I could use.
thanks in advance!

Hand Brake is great and will definitely embed subtitles, but who knows if it will handle your weird Japanese formats. When you encode in handbrake, select "ipod high-res" and then change the file size to 300Megs for half hour, 600Megs for an hour, or 1Gig for a movie - your end-file will will work on a PS3, modded XBox, an ipod, and (this is important) any video editing software or DVD burning software I've ever used, including iDVD. Of course, I'm asuming these fansubs are movies your friends made in Japan, and are not commercial productions. As I've mentioned before, I only use this type of software to convert video of my poetry slams.

If your not scared of the command line, the encoder that comes with mplayer (mencoder) is one of the most powerful converters I have used. Just be prepared to dive through pages on pages of documentation to figure out how to convert it to what you want the first time.

Handbrake is good for DVD. I use Cucusoft's Encoder for just about everything else. Handbrake is free (If I recall correctly) so try that first.
Now, as for the subtitles, I think I know what you're talking about. It's one of those strange third party subtitle deals that you use to deliver them on files that don't normally have them. That's gonna be tougher. If it were me, I'd use my TV out on my graphics card into a portable DVD burner and drop it to DVD and then rip it back in. That's crazy, I know, but I also know it'd work and I wouldn't have to fart around with a shit ton of software.

unfortunately doing the TV out option is not possible for me... plus my computer doesnt seem to handle h264 at all (by handle, i mean barely play... the video gets out of sync with the audio because the video is displayed to slow), nor does it seem to like MKV files. otherwise i woulda given up a wile ago and just played it on my computer instead of converting it...
ill check handbreak, then after that Cucusofts encoder... i pray one of them works....
