Samsung: Blu Ray has 5 years left.

Samsung has said that it sees the Blu-ray format only lasting a further 5 years before it is replaced by another format or technology.

"I think it [Blu-ray] has 5 years left, I certainly wouldn't give it 10", Andy Griffiths, director of consumer electronics at Samsung UK told Pocket-lint in an interview.

Hoping to capitalise before it's too late, Griffiths believes that 2008 is the format's year.

"It's going to be huge", he told Pocket-lint. "We are heavily back-ordered at the moment."

Citing online rental sites like LoveFilm's adoption of Blu-ray titles, the move to offer cheaper players and a now clear path to adoption following the Blu-ray HD DVD battle, Griffith says the format will be a winner, although not for long.

Instead Samsung is putting its faith in its OLED technology. The new technology, which is "ready to rock", is being held back at the moment due to high manufacturing costs.

"We will launch the OLED technology when it's at a price that will be appealing to the consumer, unfortunately that's not yet."

Griffiths, citing 2010 as a possible date for your calendar, told us he believes that when the technology becomes mainstream it will replace LCD.

"It's gonna be big, but at the moment it's a great story, not commercial, product."

I imagine Samsung would like it if BluRay failed. Sure they make a bit off of it by being a member of the BDA, but I think they would like to further secure their position as the number 1 electronics company in the world.

5 years is a long time.  Just because a successor format is released 5 years from now, doesn't mean Blu-Ray would be gone.  It's like DVD now.  It'll go on and on, it'll just be a thing where the technology is not gonna be there in 5 years to make Blu-Ray really viable.

I agree, even if blu-ray is fazed out and a new Super-HD format is out... people will still be buying blu-ray movies and blu-ray players. actully i know people still buying VHS, even to this day in 2008. wasnt that crap discontinued years ago?

I don't believe Blu Ray is going to be replaced by another HD format. Just like Laser Disc never replaced VHS. Blu Ray is going to be around for a good 10-15 years. DVD will probably be phased out with in the next 3-5 years as Blu Ray takes over. I've all ready stopped buying DVDs.

i don't want BR to go away that soon. its a pretty good format and we only just settled on this one. theres no way the studios will start selling on another format.

DVD Video only lasted 8 years, starting from when the first players were released to the introduction of Blu-Ray and HD-DVD.

Well if you like the Rangers, their AHL team "The Hartford Wolf Pack" crushed the Monsters yesterday.

Master_H At:2:40 PM

Go Rangers

Lard At:10:49 PM

Only by one point - and Ottawa has more losses. They're doing worse than the Maple Leafs! That's shameful!

Kevin J Baird At:10:45 PM

Ottawa is doing better than Colorado though, so don't feel too bad.

Lard At:10:32 PM

I'm embarassed to be an Ottawa fan. They are sucking hard.

Kevin J Baird At:10:31 PM

Well cool, but I can't think of a hockey question right now either.

I watch hockey! NFL sucks balls!
