Need to buy 5.1 headphones
|
|
|
Here's the deal: I'm downsizing my entertainment center. Which means I'm going to be selling my 7.1 surround sound speaker system. So since I won't have that anymore, I've considered getting a decent pair of 5.1 speaker. Can anyone recommend a pair?
For those curious the reason I'm getting rid of it is to make money and set it aside for college. I'm moving to Chicago in January.
Any and all suggestions are as always, appreciated. Thanks!

Chicago huh? You'll be road-trip close to Cleveland. You can come down for Cinema Wasteland and other events fairly easily.
5.1 Headphones don't really exist in the common sense. They do sell them, but they aren't really digital. They don't plug in to your optical port or anything like that. Seriously, just get yourself a nice pair of regular headphones, and I promise you it'll be good enough. Or get a simple 2.1 speaker system. I've tested and owned various 5.1 headsets are they are just gimmicks and fall apart easily.
You should really look into get a pair of Grados. Like an SR125 or something. That way you have a good reference music set as well as for watching movies and playing games. Just be careful not to get them stolen.

I have a pair of Zalman "5.1 headphones" and they fuckin suck... I have a pair of AKG Studio Headphones and they sound brilliant.... get a good pair of regular 2 speaker head phones and you'll be just fine.
5.1 headphones are a load of bullshit... just spend a couple hundred on really top of the line pair and you can't go wrong if your looking to replace a surround system with a headset in the top tier.

Kevin can those Grados plug directly into the optical port?

No, nothing can. 5.1 headphones have 2 or 3 1/8 jacks on them to plug into the Front, Back, and Sub channel of a sound card. Maybe there is some model somewhere that has a box that it plugs into, but that'd be just like a receiver.
Yea, if you want to listen to PS3 and it doesn't have a headphone jack, you're kinda screwed. Does your TV have one?

No I don't think so. I'll probably just have to buy one that has one of those mini recievers on it.

These have an optical in, are 5.1 Dolby and are wireless. I use them with my PS3's optical output and they sound fine to me. Link.

I've got a Klipsch 2.1 setup and Sennheiser HD 280 pros.
I'd recommend both. Also, if you get the klipsch speakers, get the version that have a headphone jack on them. For some reason mine don't but my buddy has the same set (pretty much) and his do.

Jedi, are you gonna be in a dorm or something? Worried about disrupting people? You should really consider a smaller speaker system with some headphones for quiet time. You WILL have people in your room playing with you. I know you're antisocial and everything, but the last thing you're gonna want is to invite someone to play PlayStation and only have one set of headphones.
It'll take you all of about 2 days to reach the point where you'll want to play some music in your room, and you'll be pissed that all you have is a set of headphones. "Hey baby, let me put some tunes on for us to listen to. Now here, put these on. I'm gonna go read a book while you enjoy the music."
"Want to watch this DVD I have? Great, let me start it up. Ok, now put on these headphones. While you watch that, I'm gonna go to the store."
Think about it.

I'm anti social? Nope. But to answer your question, yes I'll be in a
dorm. But it's not really that, that I'm worried about. It's where I'm
living right now that's the problem. I probably won't even be playing
my playstation much once I move.
