The Lost VGN Tapes (2 DATA-DVD Set)

Modified By Kevin J Baird on 10/2/2008 12:38:17 PM

Available for order from our online store, and ready to ship after September 1st 2008 is the complete collection of VGN Radio / MediSpective shows on 2 Data DVD discs.

For those who want every episode ever aired, this 2 disc set includes all of the broadcasts we've recorded from September 2004(5?) to September 2008.

This includes three never before heard episodes.  Including a segment from "Tumbling with Tumbleweed" our first ever radio show that has Don helming his music show from 1996.  In a brief conversation Don and Kevin discuss issues and events from that year.

Larry Mac's tryout for the show.  Recorded on the first night when Brian and Kevin pitched the idea of Larry coming on the show, and Larry's eager responses that allowed him to fill Don's shoes.  Let's say, there was some negotiating going on.  To put it mildly.

And the very first show ever recorded with just Brian and Kevin doing the episode, which was formerly only available as a Shoutcast streaming audio file.

Plus, if there is room on the discs, we'll include Aabel's VGN Daily segments, some stand alone extras, and maybe even some artwork.

This is the ultimate collection.  Orders can be placed in the VGN Store.  If you wanted to own the entire collection, or wanted to give it as a gift, this is the set you will want to own.  4 years in the making.  (Or a little over 3, I gotta check)  There's a lot of funny in these 2 discs, and a great historic record of video game craziness over the years.

All proceeds from the sale of the discs goes towards paying for the yearly VGN hosting charges which are now greater than $700 a year.  Questions, issues, or concerns, feel free to respond here.

Awesome. I'll have to order that soon. I still have my old VGN archive CD from 2005.

Btw why in the world are the hosting costs over $700 a month?

EDIT: retail price is $21 while I can pay $0?! Thats a great deal kevin. You save 100%!

Sorry about that, it's fixed now.  The long description is available when you look at the product.  I had to shorten the short description because it was too lond and throwing an error.

Re: The Lost VGN Tapes (2 DATA-DVD Set)

The original CD is still a collector's item in that it has the original Christmas episode that is only found on that disc and has never been released to the public.  (Short of piracy of course)  That episode will not be included in the 2 Disc set, as it was a one-time offering for those folks who bought the original CD.  (Which was limited to about 200 discs if I recall)

The hosting charge for the file server is a little over $50 a month.  We distribute a lot of files to a lot of people and it consumes a lot of resources.  Cheaper hosting exists but was a problem when more than 200 simultaneous connections occured as it would break people's connections and dump them.  This is typically what budget hosts do.  Most podcasts don't have that problem because they don't get 200+ downloads at the exact same time.  We've been blessed with that issue, however, so we need more resilient hosting.  (Other podcasts experimented with torrent based feeds, which we tried in the past with poor results.)  We let you download the show, a large portion of old shows, stream the show, and we produce a very high quality feed.  Not to mention the show has gotten much longer which makes up larger file sizes overall.  All that together uses up a hella-lotta bandwith.  And we've been warned twice this year that we're getting close to going over our set amount.  That tends to only happen when we do Extended during a busy month.  But never the less, it adds up, so hopefully we can sell a few discs to folks and off-set the expense.

The reason it's $21 is to make it higher than a single tier contest entry.  It's not super cheap, as you can buy a game for the same money, but I wanted to offer it to people who wanted the COMPLETE collection and a nice piece of VGN history.  There is hundreds of hours of content here.  All the memories, all the guests, all the belches.  The whole thing.  Plus the never before heard stuff.  And I might throw in some extra stuff.  Depends.  But as it stands, I think it's a fair price for what it is.  I really think in twenty years, it'll be fun to go back and listen to some of this old stuff and remember not just the stuff that we did and said on the show, but the time period of gaming that was happening then.  The first shows predate Halo 2, Half Life 2, and the Nintendo DS.   That's a lot of history.

Hey K-man . Will this be available in a limited supply or will you be able to burn some new one's if there's demand . I want to buy this, but I wont be able to do it before I reach Canada, which is basically in Jan. . Will it get exhausted or something in supply coz someone like Jedi will buy all of them, and build a castle out of it, or what ??

That's a good question Deus.  Without a long explanation as to why, the difference will be in price.  Those who order before September are locked in with the current price.  Those who order after September will find a higher price.  It's simply easier on me and my time to do them all at once and in batches than to do them piece by piece.  So they'll be available for awhile, but they won't always be the same price.

I still have that old VGN cd. I have to go find it again, but I basically haven't touched it. But I will drop the money on this too.

Re: The Lost VGN Tapes (2 DATA-DVD Set)

I intend to use printable DVD-R Dual Layer discs.  At the moment I haven't focused on what will be on the disc itself.  And I'll "probably" print a back cover.  If any of you would like to donate some graphics for either portion, I'll take them.  Just send them to editor@videogamenews.com If more than one person submits something, I'll let people pick which graphics they want on their disc.  Keep in mind a DVD is like a donut and has a big hole in the middle.  So sending a square graphic with words in the middle won't work so well.

Otherwise, if no one is interested, I'll piece together some zombies and eyeballs with satan pictures and use that.  You know how it is.

Peace

Jedi's greatest hits will be on the discs.  Most of the audio show is recorded at 96k.  We used to record in different bitrates, from 128k stereo to 24k mono.  Whatever is the best available for any show is what I'll put on the discs.  I won't be putting on multiple versions, however, just best available.  Very early shows were only done in 24k mono.  This was to allow them to be streamed on Shoutcast to dial-up users.

24k...That seemed crazy to me because I just don't believe that anyone in 2004 and 2005 was still on dial up listening to VGN.

Btw, you started doing 128k audio for the Wasteland warriors when that came about. Before WW it was all 24k afaik.

Oh there was.  I was one of those poor unfortunate souls.  But back then, just having a show about videogames, let alone one like VGN, was nearly unheard of, so it was worth putting up with the buffering.

Anyway, this is a great idea.  I missed the last CD set you guys sold, so I'm definitely going to pick this up.
