Cartoon Network ending Toonami after 11 years.

It makes me sad really.
| America's Cartoon Network has revealed at Georgia's Anime Weekend Atlanta convention this morning that it will end its Toonami
programming block tonight after 11 years. The official announcement
will be made during tonight's final run, with an "important message"
during the 10:30 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. ET/PT timeslot. Naruto has been the only Japanese series in this Saturday evening block recently, but Toonami
used to host a variety of Japanese-animated programs when it began as a
weekday afternoon block in 1997. Among those titles were Voltron, Robotech, Sailor Moon, Dragon Ball, Ronin Warriors, G-Force: Guardians of Space, Blue Submarine No. 6, Tenchi Muyo!, Cardcaptors, Zoids, .hack//SIGN, Yu Yu Hakusho, Rurouni Kenshin, The Big O, Outlaw Star, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Cyborg 009, Duel Masters, Astro Boy, Gundam, Rave Master, Zatch Bell, One Piece, Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, Pokémon, MÄR, The Prince of Tennis, Megaman Star Force, Bakugan Battle Brawlers, and Blue Dragon. The Toonami Jetstream online streaming service will reportedly still continue, and Cartoon Network is working to import the Japanese-animated Demashitaa! Powerpuff Girls Z spinoff that is based on its own Powerpuff Girls series.
Two episode of Naruto are currently scheduled for tonight at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT. The 2002 live-action Spider-Man film will run instead of Toonami on September 27, although most television listings have not been updated yet. Batman: Gotham Knight, this summer's Japanese-animated video tie-in to The Dark Knight film, will then run on October 4 at 8:00 p.m. After BatMan: Gotham Knight, an episode of Naruto, "Powerful Helper," will run at 9:30 p.m., but there are no other episodes scheduled yet |
So the online streaming service will continue but the block on the network is disappearing. I guess its not so surprising. I figured this would happen a few years ago when they switched it from daily to weekly.

Probably largely due to video games. Kids don't come home and watch cartoons as much anymore. They throw on a video game. That, coupled with the new generation of kids that do everything organized, and there is left time for it as well. (Organized Sports, Hobbies, Camps, etc.) It's not like the 80's when a dude would get home from school at 3pm, plop down on the couch and watch the boob-toob for 3 hours while waiting for the parents to arrive home and have dinner.

That's a valid theory, but Toonami was on Saturday nights only since 2004.
I think it has more to do with the fact that only one show on the block has been getting good ratings in the past couple of years and so Toonami was morphed into the block of Naruto and whatever crap cartoon network had in their back catalog. There was no point in keeping it around. They might as well just air naruto without the need of a special programming block.

I still remember way back when they'd play Robotech every day. I tuned in recently to catch Blue Dragon, which was awful.

I have many fond memories of spending the afternoon at my friend's house watching DBZ, Gundam Wing and Tenchi Muyo. To be honest, though, Cartoon Network hasn't really put any resources into Toonami since Adult Swim got big.
That reminds me, remember when Adult Swim was for the anime they couldn't show on Toonami? Now it's just Family Guy and a bunch of homegrown bullshit.

You know whats weird? Blue dragon must be at least kind of popular in Japan still. The second season just started in April. How they can watch that garbage is beyond me. it's not just the dub that's bad so I know it isn't somehow magically better in japanese. The whole thing is awful, from the animation to the story.

Gundam Wing Zero! Now that was a pretty cool show I had forgotten about.
Blue Dragon is just a weird IP. The creators involved, the music, and even the designs make it seem like it would be a great game, and in turn pretty good anime, but it's not. I'm still trying to finish that thing, but I swear the story was writting by and for 9 year olds. Maybe it's mainly the 9 year old audience watching in Japan?

Probably. The kids shows that will never be popular here are always popular in Japan. I think crayon shin chan still takes the number 1 spot practically every week.
