I had been reading about this program called PlayOn that will stream Hulu, CBS, and other online video streaming services (Netflix coming soon) to a PS3, 360, and most DNLA complient devices. Some Tvs have this and other media streamers. It only has a Windows version and you need WMP11 installed. I installed the program on my Mac using Parallels with 1 gig of RAM dedicated to the guest OS. I was streaming to my PS3. It was all Hulu and there was some freezing here and there and some pauses, but it was working very smoothly for the most part. Very watchable. I think its a 60 day trial with a one time fee of $30 for the program. I am surpised it did so well on the Parallels system since it virtualizes a pretty weak CPU.

Yeah - it's pretty great. There's every episode of Jericho, Arrested
Development, and Star Trek TOS. There's also a lot of old Twilight
Zone episodes and whole seasons of 30 Rock, Buffy, Angel, and B5. I've had some
stopping and freezing and the quality ranges, but IF they really get
the Netflix Watch Now thing going I'll pony out the 30 Bucks. I'm
having a hard time adjusting to the PS3 from XBMC (I had to leave the
XBOX in Europe because of weight restrictions) - a lot of stuff, like
Sirius radio, that I could just stream off the internet into XBMC I
need to "bridge" onto the PS3, even though the PS3 is like a million
times more powerfull than a modded XBOX or my laptop. The upside is
that the interface for the PS3 is better than XBMC and, even though the
PS3 does a horrible job organizing my content, (XBMC just uses folders)
I can name playlists using a keyboard. I guess the idea is to make
doing anything on PS3 except buying from the PLAYSTATIONStore so
complicated you just give up.

I have had some freezing, mostly on 40 minute long stuff. All the half an hour shows play just fine. But I am also using a virutalized OS with the minimum processor being virtualized. I am thinking of getting a cheap Dell off of ebay with a P4 2.4GHz and a gig of ram to stream this to the PS3 and also use it to stream my iTunes to my iPhone.

Dude, if you're gonna do that, why not just get a cheap Media Center PC like the one I listed in the bargain thread? Then you don't have to fart-around with this crap. You can watch everything, and it records TV just like a Tivo. You can do Netflix, iTunes, Unbox, Hulu, Joost, DVD, etc. Plus it typically has a remote, you can play some games on it, browse the web, and you can shove it behind the TV and nobody has to look at it.
I get this whole extender thing you guys are doing, but if you're gonna keep your Mac/PC on anyway, and you got one streaming to the other, it just makes more sense to get a Media Center PC in the living room and have it all.

I have looked into a cheap Media Center to replace my cable box, but it would have to record 2 HD streams. Anyway the systems I am looking at are around 150-200 which is less then half the price of the bargain. But thats just my situation, ideally I would like to have a media center to replace my cable DVR but there are pros and cons of both, mainly getting a dual HD QAM tuner for the computer and also the price.
But as far as Hulu goes I am liking it. It has commercials at the usual commercial breaks, but its only 1 30 second and you are back to the show. I actually pay attention to the commercial more than on TV since I know the show will be coming back on. I discovered they have Buffy seasons 1 and 2, and The Terminator show that I never watched last fall. But ti keeps freezing when I watch these, so thats why I want the cheap upgrade. But watching Family Guy or Its Always Sunny, works fine and only have a few pauses.

I feel you about buying a cheap Media Center PC, but what I was really trying to do with the PS3 is replace the modded XBox and get a blueray player. It's just easier to access mp3s, podcasts and photos on the PS3 by remote than it would be on a PC that takes longer to start up and I lways have to update and shit. I also want to play that SFHD game online when it comes out. Yesterday my cousin just stuck an SD card into the PS3 and we were able to look at her photos on the TV in no time flat . Anyways, I bought the PS3, so there's no going back now.
Frankly, I'm having less trouble than Character 0,and I only have 1 1.5 Ghz processor - You probably just need to have a wired connection on both ends.

Re: Stream Hulu with PlayOn

I think the majority of the problem is the amount of space left on my virtual hard drive. I only had like a gig and it says it reallly needs about 4-5 gigs to do the conversions. So I think that was getting me on the longer shows. I am in the process of cleaning that drive up since its backup up anyway. I thought it had expanded it but it didn't seem to take. Once I free up about 4-5 gigs then I am going to try and watch another hour long show to see if it freezes. But as far as the half-hour stuff it works very well.
So I can get a cheap 2.6-3.0 GHz Dell with a 40 gig hard drive and that ill be enough for what I need.

Ok... I hear where you guys are coming from. I still have an HD DVR
from my cable company. I use the Media Center PC to record a third
digital channel, and an OTA HD channel. OTA HD is actually better
quality than cable or dish HD because it doesn't go through any
compression. Depends on where you live and if you have an antenna.
Second, you just leave it on all the time KD. You don't have to turn
it on and off. It's recording shows. You could put it in Suspend Mode
if you want. I guarantee you it comes out of that faster than the PS3
does to warm up, play its little Tune with it's swirly wave, and then
show you the menu bar. But I leave mine on all the time.
The remote controls iTunes and Media Center. Although I use my iPhone
to control iTunes now, as it's better. Of course, you can't do that at
all with a PS3.
I know everyone doesn't have money to throw around, and spending that kind of cash is high if you just want to stream some movies or whatever. But I used to do this shit you guys are doing. Hacking together some makeshift deal thing so you can say, "Hey look at that honey, I got streaming movies on the TV." and she can say, "Can I still watch my shows?" and you say, "Yea, but you gotta let me switcheroo the cables and flip on this device here. Lemme show you." and she says, "Does it always come up with that error message there? Where are the files at?" and you get flustered and say, "I dunno! Fuck! Look, never mind, the damn thing only works sometimes. Just push cable on the remote and watch your shows." and she says, "You're not gonna get ride of cable for THAT are you?" and then you just grumble and say, "No, nevermind, fucking forget it."
And stuff freezes, and directories go out of order, and things lock up, and you buy routers and wires and start wondering about how you can get the sound better, or it'd be great if you had a remote or a longer mouse cord, etc.
Anyway... If you get a shitty PC, just get one with a graphics card that does TV out. Almost all of them do. Even the ancient ones. Then just use the crappy PC as your player and forgo the Media Center portion. It'd still be better than trying to shimmy together this crap you guys are doing.

Re: Stream Hulu with PlayOn

Well for me, I have my cable modem across the house from my TV. And I really don't have enough room around my TV for another component. Plus I don't have desktops hooked up anymore and I don't like leaving my laptop on 24/7 so I can stream this, that, and the other. Not really hacking anything together, just need a dedicated PC to do my streaming next to my router and stuff. Ideally I would have a Media Center PC hooked up directly to the TV, but for now, streaming is easier.
But back to the PlayOn program. Its not just to the 360 or PS3, it can go to most any DLNA/UPnP devices, including some of the Direct TV HD recievers, which is cool. And also I think some internet enabled TVs too.

will the show be late this week since you have to add the music in on top of everything else that you normally do?

Only by one point - and Ottawa has more losses.
They're doing worse than the Maple Leafs! That's shameful!

Ottawa is doing better than Colorado though, so don't feel too bad.
