Telegames Personal Arcade

Modified By Kevin J Baird on 2/22/2008 11:08:45 AM

From The Wikipedia:

The Telegames Personal Arcade was the US version of Bit Corporation's DINA 2-in-1. This slim console could play both ColecoVision and Sega SG-1000 cartridges. It came equipped with Nintendo NES styled control pads, and even had a built in game called "Meteoric Shower". Since the DINA control pads did not contain the numeric keypad of the actual ColecoVision controller, they were mounted on the unit itself. It also sported a "pause" button that could be used for SG-1000 games.

History

In the late 1980s Coleco was feeling the pains of the "Videogame Crash". Britain-based company Telegames eventually purchased the rights to the ColecoVision console, and bought most of Coleco's stock. Rather than selling Coleco's bulky unit, Telegames began manufacturing and distributing the Bit Corporation designed DINA 2-in-1. In 1988 the renamed DINA became the Telegames Personal Arcade. The unit was sold via mail order catalogs. The unit was even sold through Telegames USA, a Texas-based videogame mail-order store for only $40USD.

Compatibility

As impressive as the Telegames Personal Arcade was for the price, it did have its share of flaws. The console was not compatible with all ColecoVision carts. Part of the reason was due to the lack of a second player numeric keypad. The Atari 2600 adaptor and other expansion devices were incompatible due to the positioning of the power and RF connectors. Some units had a manufacturers defect that caused the system to draw too much power into the motherboard causing damage after long term play.

Telegames Personal Arcade was only advertised as a ColecoVision alternative. Western gamers were never aware of its Sega SG-1000 capabilities. Owners probably mistook the additional slot as an expansion port. It is not known if the SG-1000 slot was disabled by Telegames.

I might go buy an SG-1000 cart and see if it works with it.  I've never even turned this console on.  I bought it new from Telegames when they sold them.

Re: Telegames Personal Arcade

I just got an SG-1000 Cartridge from Japan.  Cost me $12.  So next time the moon is in the proper alignment I'm going to break this sucker out and see if the expansion port is activated and will allow me to play SG-1000 carts.  If not, no big deal, I'll keep the cart as a collectable.  Not like there are a lot of SG-1000 cartridges roaming around anyway.

Now I just need to buy an SG-1000.  Ha!

you could just lock the threads....as long as people keep posting new stuff, the old threads will get bumped off the screen.

Jedihillis At:9:19 AM

Ok nm. I figured out you can edit each thread with new info. I'll edit one of the old ones for the next battle to keep from dominating the screen. Good call kolop

Jedihillis At:9:16 AM

Good question Kolop. I'm not sure that it can to be honest

kolop1 At:3:40 AM

Can the voting be one thread only? It's going to take up a lot of threads for this game.

Jedihillis At:1:21 AM

I don't know why you can't vote. I leave each poll up for 2-3 days. Polls are only open on the most recent battle though which currently is Bison vs. Kain.
