I have two of these in the original model format. During the height of their "popularity" I left one on all the time as a gateway. I lived next to a very busy intersection and it was a sort of experiment to see if anyone, ever, would come online and try and communicate with my unit. After about 4 months of leaving it unattended, it appeared that a young girl had written it, assuming it was someone she knew. It just said something like, "Hi Mark, do you know where the bags are? Janet." Or something like that. I realized at that point the thing was a failure and put it away.
It had good intentions, but the wireless power limitations for WiFi devices is too low in the United States to make P2P networks useful.
