Midnight Club L.A. Remix for the PSP is an open world racing game that follows the path of the protagonist as he makes his way up the street racing food chain by competing in events that earn him experience points, called Rep in the game.
Rep is gained in MCR no matter where you place in these events. So if you lose a race it's not a total loss. Which is a great system for those that want to dig deep into the game and since Rep earns you abilities, you're going to want to keep your hand on the clutch to keep getting better. Abilities like Argo lets aggressive drivers push cars aside while Zone lets your slow down the racing world to make hairpin turns. There are others to earn in Midnight Club, some more useful than others and they all add a nice arcade-y twist to the races which I enjoyed.
The more races you win the more money you can earn. Money gives you more options to buy cars and with cars like the 2010 Chevy Camaro or the 2009 Dodge Challenger, gear heads have lots of incentive to keep driving. Money also affords you to buy modifications for your car, some that can greatly influence the race and some are just fun to have, more on that later.
The controls are fairly precise, while not as forgiving as say Burnout Paradise they fit the architecture and traffic of the world nicely. If the streets were filled with more cars or the corners a bit narrower then power sliding, and weaving in and out of traffic would not have worked as well as it does here. After the race you can always go to your garage. Here you will be able to customize your ride in a lot of different ways. From tinting windows to upgrading your engine, or changing your exhaust color MCR isn’t Gran Turismo but for such an arcade style racer you get a lot of options to tweak and tinker with your car.
Midnight Club L.A. Remix looks great on the PSP. The car models you will use are fairly detailed and the environments look very good even when driving by them at 100 MHP. The colors can be a bit drab but everything moves by so fast it’s hard to really notice let alone care too much. My one complaint is when standing still the cars around you lack a significant amount of detail. It’s noticeable when a race is getting set to begin or has just ended.
Overall it puts a lot of objects on the screen at once and handles it all very well. I hardly noticed any slow down if at all and the sense of speed even on the PSP is fantastic.
Midnight Club L.A. doesn’t do everything right. It’s GPS system can cause some confusion, sometimes check points can be a bit far apart which causes you to take your eyes off the road and down at your GPS causing some bumps and crashes that can cost you a race. Speaking of losing races, get ready to lose a lot of races. The rubber-band A.I. means you are not safe with a lead, but it does keep things competitive if you make a wrong turn and have to get back on track.
The world of Midnight Club is expansive and rich. There are hidden paths to find and secret items to hunt down. Finding these items can earn you more cash so there is a real benefit to finding them other than bragging rights.
Overall Midnight Club L.A. Remix does a lot of things right. It fits perfectly on a PSP and with it’s constant auto-save it’s great to pull out and play when traveling or on a lunch break. If you are a open world racing fan, this is a must buy.
8 out of 10
