The Mortal Kombat Kollection consists of three games; Mortal Kombat Deception, Mortal Kombat Armageddon and Shaolin Monks, all for $29.99 this holiday season.
Deception and Armageddon are both 3d fighting games. Both have multi laired arenas which allow you to knock combatants through walls, ceilings, into spikes and even down into a a pit. Both games have a lot of un-lockables allowing you to unlock more fighters, arenas, movies and art work. Un-lockables are attained by collecting coins, by playing mini-games, fighting in the tournament, or playing in Konquest mode. You then use those coins to open up graves in the crypt, or by opening slots in a mausoleum.
Deception is the weakest of the two, the fighting at times seems slow and the fighters often feel wooden and clunky. Each fighter has three fighting styles and you can combine those styles to make some pretty unique combinations. The mini games consists of Puzzle fighting and Chess. Puzzle fighting is very fun. A Tetris like game where you choose a fighter and he fights at the bottom of the screen against another fighter as the game goes on, with the winner performing a fatality. Chess has you choose each fighter to represent a chess piece, but unlike chess if you want to take an opponent’s piece, you have the fight for it. The pawns are the weakest and only has half the strength of a king piece. So, it is harder to take a king piece with a pawn piece. Konquest mode feels like an after thought. You play as a student in training and you spend a lot of time learning moves. Throughout the Konquest modes there are chests and they either have coins to be used in the krypt, or un-lockables like art work. The online community seems to be dead for this game as they have seemed to have moved on to Armageddon.
Armageddon feels and looks much more polished. The fighting is a bit faster and the movement is more fluid. Each fighter only has two fighting styles in this game, but that does not take anything away from the fun. You also have sixty fighters to choose from and each fighter is as unique as the next. Kart racing is one of the mini-games. Each racing course has weapons that fit each character, like Scorpion’s rope throw can be used to grab a kart in front of you and thrown it behind you. You can also collect coins scattered throughout the course to use in the mausoleum. The Konquest mode is also much better. You play as Taven or Daegon and as before there are chests you can open to collect coins, and unlock clothes for the character creation. There are also musical notes lying around and when you touch them you unlock extra arenas. Character creation is also nice. You can decide the size, clothing, background story and fighting styles of your character. Most of the clothing and fighting styles need to be unlocked either by purchasing them or by playing Konquest mode. Online just adds to this game. You can take your created characters and see how well they fair against the world. The online community for this game is still there even though this game is a few years old.
Shaolin Monks lets you play as either Liu Kang or Kung Lao. For the most part it’s a side scrolling hack and slash. Loads of enemies attack you from all sides and you need to be light on you feet. As you progress through the game you earn power-ups which allow you to perform brutal combinations and fatalities. If you play CO-OP mode you and a friend can play through this game together which only just adds to the fun. The fast paced action of this game combined with the number of attack combinations make this game a lot of fun.
This collection of games is well worth the price of $29.99. There is enough here to keep any gamer happy for hours on end.
