Star Ocean: The Last Hope

As much as I wanted to say this game is fantastic and it is everything that I ever hoped Star Ocean: The Last Hope could be I can not. The rollercoaster of emotions that this “game” drug me through has got to be a first for me. The game started off slow, but quickly became a lot of fun, until the system-crashes began and then it was a whole different story.
Square-Enix has not had a very good track record with their JRPG releases for the Xbox 360, but this one was on the right track. The story alone was very intriguing, a celestial journey in search of habitable planets for a struggling human race, although, that story-line does not last very long and you are all of a sudden thrown into tangent after tangent which eventually becomes a save the universe tale.
I did however have a problem with the presentation of the story. The character's animations were far from polished and at times reminded me of the marionettes that children used to watch at parties. They were robotic and jerky in nature and the similarities to puppets do not end there. The expressionless faces, blank stares lacking emotion just waiting for their batteries to run out. Then there was the terrible voice-acting and writing that left much to be desired.
Not all of the voice acting is horrible, on the contraire, Arumat and Myurial’s voice-overs are quite well, it is all the other voicing that is devoid of character. On top of all this there is the undesirable writing that plagues my ears with the overuse of words like okay and more importantly "‘kay" (which is not even a word). Also, the long-winded cut-scenes that can last upwards of 45 minutes can be tiresome; luckily skipping past them is as fast as the press of the start button which brings you to a synopsis of the scene you skipped. Still, if you skip the cut-scenes you will miss some of the idiosyncrasies the scenes have to offer.
But, aside from the hit or miss voicing and writing follies, the battle-system is a real treat. Not your typical turn-based RPG, this game sets you in a small area in which to do real-time battle. All the characters have their own special abilities and attacks which can lead to beautiful chaos on the screen. And changing characters while in battle-mode can be done on the fly. (NOTE: Other sites explain that you can get through this game simply by pressing the “A” button, but trust me that is not the case. The game becomes quite a bit more challenging the further you get and there is a difficulty setting at the start of the game.) Boss battles tend to be quite hectic (some last over forty-five minutes) and switching out dead teammates for live ones will be a necessity.
In addition to the battle-system the adventuring can be enjoyable. Whether you are on the ground hunting for harvest and mining points or visiting different planets the questing is entertaining. I spent a lot of time grinding by simply running through areas killing monsters and harvesting materials (which can be used to make items)…but, there is something more discerning that must be addressed.
I wish I could have slapped an 8 on this review (because I thought it was that good) but I can’t. There is a fatal flaw in the “game” and that is the system crashes (Note: not all people are having this problem). How would you feel if your gaming time depended on how long it would take for your session to freeze? Playing from save point to save point, hoping, no… praying that the game will not freeze when you are two hours in and still have not found a place to save. Or, battling a boss that has taken 45 minutes and you think he is almost dead, only to have the game suddenly halt. Welcome to my world! I tried everything to stop the freezing, from downloading the game to the HDD to clearing the cache to switching Xboxes altogether but to no avail.
Plus, I thought that I could look past the freezing issues, maybe I can only run the game for less than four hours at a time. WRONG! I am about 30 hours into the game (on the second disc) and I am fighting some big bad bug. Yet, 35-45 minutes into the battle... tires screech to a grinding stop, my brain swells, eyes turn red, smoke spews from my ears as the death-grip on my controller begins to show stress fractures from sheer pressure. I played the same match six times with the same outcome, which means I can not progress the game any further. BROKEN!
So, understandably there are many people out there thoroughly enjoying this title and I am not one of them. Regrettably, I do not even want to score this “game” but I must. Because this game is broken with a bug that will not let me progress I have to give this game a 4 out of 10 and I think that is being lenient.

Nice review, Madmex, even if I think you were a little harsh. :D You sure this was Star Ocean crashing your 360 or just the console in general? My 360 took a poop while I was playing the new R-type XBLA demo. Good job though.

Yea, I tried it on both of my 360's and had the same affect. It is sad because I really like the game, but this issue can not be overlooked. There are many others out there having the same problems, but the lucky majority seem to be in Star Ocean Heaven, I'm talking to you NUTMAN!! lucky bastard....

Yeah dude I haven't had it freeze once. I'm really enjoying the game and have not encountered any technical issues. I'm currently about 7 1/2 hours into the game.
Love:
-The battle system. It's really fun, really fast, and really exciting.
-The story. It's a good anime-ish storyline. I'm liking it. But iive never played any other Star Ocean games.
-The planets, dungeons etc. All the planets so far have been pretty unique and really detailed. The dungeons are also satisfying with some simple puzzles and fun boss fights.
-The technical performance. I have not installed this game and it runs really well. The load times are crazy fast. They're generally only about 2 seconds when traveling from one area to the next. There isn't any pop-in(That ive noticed) and framerate is good. This was a relief considering the horror stories I heard about The Last Remnant.
-The background info/extra details found in the dictionary.
-The graphics. Simply gorgeous.
Hate:
-This game is not good for newcomers. The game didn't teach me shit. Even the annoying and boring tutorial battle simulator skipped many important things that I had to find out on my own
-The purple haired chick from home base that is the typical bubbly anime girl.
Mixed feelings:
-The voice acting. Most of the characters have ok voice acting, but the little girl is fucking annoying. She sounds like a lifeless doll and says 'kay at the end of every sentence.
-Is this game even HD? I don't think it is...I've got normal sized black bars on the top and bottom and skinny black bars on the right and left. I didn't even notice it until today though and it doesn't bother me.
Is that a boy or a girl?:

I'm having battles freeze up on me as well... I seem to have isolated it to switching out downed characters in battle. I've had this action freeze me up twice, and only when I swap chars out in battle :( very VERY annoying. (Especially the first one during the marathon battle against the phantoms)

Here's a summary about the crashing issue. Appears to be a HD-TV (1080i/p) issue, and involve the "miss" text that appears above the heads of a caster.
Workaround: play in 720 mode...

hey, some of us like goofy dialogue, kay? personally i think this game is really funny, kay? i also love the character design although i agree that they are kind of borg-like and expressionless, kay? overall i think this game is one that needs an acquired taste for goofy jrpgs, kay?

I've encountered the same problem as well and after some research apparently even the 720p trick may not work (was mentioned by someone in the game forums). I really hope a patch is put out as well because I enjoy the game myself a lot too but the freezing issue makes it practically unplayable.
And I wont hold my breath on a patch either since they still have done nothing to fix the god awful tech problems in Last Remnant.
I'm gonna try it one last time in 720p and if it doesnt work it's just gonna sit until I hear about a patch. And if one does not come out in time for the big game releases in the summer then well.... *sighs*

I have the freezing issue as well, 60+ hours into the game, but it seems to happen to me in the "field" and no other time. I feel your pain mex, as I've spent countless hours (yes, hours) clearing dungeons, only to have the game freeze on me with nary a save point for tracking my progress. I've had to do the same dungeons multiple times due to this problem. It's definitely not a system error, as I've been reading a lot of similar posts. Not to mention, my system was just repaired for the RRoD problem not too long ago.

I just landed on Nox Obscurus and started heading toward the final boss. Except my game started freezing now. It's weird, I actually explored the first area (where you land) and went back and did a few quests. Only when I actually started to head out toward the final boss did it start freezing.
It's not feezing in battles either! I'm just walking around in the field and it locks up. It froze twice as I started to walk away from my ship, and once a little deeper in (though I didn't make it to the next save point).
I think I'm going to give up on this game entirely.
Your review was pretty spot on. Also, is it just me? But this game does NOT look like it belongs on a next-gen system. Thing thing looks like it should belong on PS2 or Gamecube. I don't know what it is, but it just doesn't look right. Final Fantasy 12 looked way better than this...

The game only froze on me once, between sections of a cutscene in the beginning of the game. I'm over 40 hrs into the game right now. (2nd disc, about to go back to Aeos.) But maybe it's because we're using the 360 Elite. Has anyone else had relative success on this system, or are we just lucky?
Anywho, since I've been able to play the game pretty much straight through, I love it to death.

I'm on my second play through with a total of about 300 hours clocked, and I've suffered no freezing, in game bugs, or other such technical difficulties. If you had any slight idea about characterization, you'd understand the use of language to create personality, and that people don't speak perfectly, that they do use words such as 'kay and dammit. I've not had any problems progressing through the game, so either your so called game bug doesn't exist and you're just not playing right, or your 360 is close to death.
As for your harsh assessment of the graphics, labelling the characters as marionettes... if you want realism, go watch a movie; complaining about the graphics is like whining that The Simpsons doesn't look real. It's a game, no one expects it to look realistic.

Actually, I understand the difference in "realism" and gaming. When it comes to "current generation" games, I prefer them to have a degree of polish that this game didn't have. I guess you don't mind your games performing as an early generation ps2 title but I myself have standards for each generation of systems. This "game" was fun I admit, but I couldn't overcome the barrier of my freezing issue, and if they finally came out with a patch...then...yay for them, they fixed a serious crash bug WAY after submitting the game. Lucky for me, everybody is allowed an opinion and we heard many opinions on this thread, some agree and some disagree. You happen to be one that disagrees and your entitled to that opinion. Thanks for posting.
