There’s trouble in the Nicktoons’ world. The Globulous have come to take over their universe forcing friends and enemies to come together to fight off this menace.
The game starts off with Spongebob and Squidward getting ready to go to work in Bikini Bottom, but just as they are leaving their houses it starts raining orange blobs. One of the globs lands on Squidward’s head and it takes over his mind. When Patrick appears wanting to know what’s going on, Spongebob tells him not to touch the orange stuff. Jimmy Neutron then appears through a portal and tells him he needs his help and that Bikini Bottom is not the only place that is under attack. From there we go to Jimmy Neutron’s lair on Volcano Island; a place that lets him teleport throughout the Nicktoons’ world. We are then introduced to Spongebob, Invader Zim, Jimmy Neutron, Danny, Tak, Plankton, Traloc, Technus, Dib and Beautiful Gorgeous. Some of whom are good and some who are evil, all having to join forces to get rid of the Globulous menace.
You are then given a weapon that is based on the personality of each character. Spongebob got a bubble blower, while Invader Zim gets a plunger and so on. Fans of each show should get the references. Weapons can be upgraded by collecting coins. When you collect enough coins you can go to the weapons shop on Volcano Island and upgrade them.
Before you enter each level you and another Nicktoons character need to go through a portal, which brings on a coin collecting mini-game where you are propelled forward and need to avoid the obstacles to reach the end. Each level represents the actual cartoon world of one of the characters. Being a fan of Spongebob and Invader Zim, I recognized a lot of their town right away, such as Spongebob’s Boating school and the skool (it’s spelled this way in the game) Invader Zim attends are both made true to their cartoon counterparts.
The game play itself is buggy. You and a computer controlled character play through each level, but the computer character is really no help and does not really need to be there. Most of the time they stand around while you fight or they do strange things like walking off ledges and killing themselves for no reason. They also repeat themselves a lot as you are fighting, saying the same things over and over again. You can have a friend play as the other character and it’s much better that way. Another problem, Orange glob goo is everywhere; sometimes you can walk though it and it just slows you down, and other times it’s too deep and you sink. The problem with this is you never know which is which. You step in thinking its okay to walk around in only to sink. You never die in this game, but you do respawn, usually right where you died, which can be a bad thing. One time I fell off a cliff, only to keep respawning at the edge of the cliff to keep infinitely falling off.
The other big problem is the camera. I know it’s a kid’s game, but there is no excuse for this. A lot of the jumps are all most blind leaps of faith as you can not really see where you are going. Sometimes you need to attempt the same jump several times just to get it right. Sometimes your character walks too close to the right of the screen, so you can’t see the on coming enemies as they are punching you. I don’t care if you are a kid or an adult these issues will make you want to throw your controller.
Keeping in mind this is a kid’s game, your kid may get enjoyment out of playing as his or her favorite characters. I just wish THQ put a little more effort into this game. The really bad camera angles are terrible. This is the type of thing that could turn children off to gaming.
