Gears of War 2

Gore, dismemberment, death Gears of War 2 provides it all.  When the first Gears came out in 2006, it was touted as being one of the best games of the year, and to my surprise, Epic drastically improved upon the first one with Gears of War 2.  The enhancements that have been made cover every aspect of this magnificent title with the story, mechanics, and multiplayer to name a few.

The first Gears did not really have much of a story besides the fact that emergence day had arrived and the human race failed in eradicating the Locust invasion.  It was pretty lack luster and was merely meant for a continuous kill fest (which was ok), and not much different from now but in Gears 2 there is a feeling of accomplishment that was never attained in the first.  The story is more cinematic than you remember the first Gears being and feels as if you play a role in a movie.  But aside from the feeling of accomplishment there is also a sense of motivation, with facets of the story stirring emotions in your being and increases the lust for Locust blood.

Sating the appetite for the demise of the Locust Horde is easily done with the new maneuvers and the new weaponry that is at your disposal and do not forget the joy of killing with the tried and true machine-gun chainsaw called the Lancer.  Mowing down enemies has never been so fun when you have the Mulcher (Gatling gun) equipped and blowing bad guys away with the mortars is enjoyable too.  The flame-thrower is great when you are in the cooking spirit but the Lancer is still where the party begins.  Shoving my saw into the back of a Locust and having it stick out the front of its chest is satisfying, just to wrench the Lancer upward splitting the baddie in two; it makes for a hair tingling experience.  That is just the beginning of my delight in morbidity, the new maneuvers also brings treats to the table.

Just because an enemy drops after being riddled with bullets does not mean he is dead, he begins crawling along the ground pleading for his buddy to revive him.  During this time a maneuver should be used; there is a different finishing move for each style of weapon that is equipped.  With a sniper rifle, for instance, it is a long gun and is used sort of like an axe to the head (which is pretty gratifying).  But the best is being able to pick up a crawling opponent and use the enemies body as a meat shield, seeing the shield get doused with bullets makes me giddy.  But there is something else that I would rather do and it involves breaking the neck of the malevolent spawn.  An evil smirk comes across my face and a ghastly chuckle leaves my lips every time I hear the crack of a Locust neck snapping in my surround sound speakers.  The killing in this game is a thing of beauty.

Speaking of beauty, the direction Gears 2 has taken with the enhanced Unreal Engine 3 has dramatically improved over the previous installment.  The atmosphere of the different locations adds to the visceral sensations that lazily creep along your spine.  The lighting, the textures, and the shadows make this one of the new show pieces that the Xbox 360 has to offer.  It is a stunning title and witnessing the action on a high-definition television just adds to the excitement.

Looks are not the only improvements that have been made to this game.  In the first Gears, getting into and out of cover had many people upset.  But in the new and improved Gears, I have yet to find that problem and it is not from lack of trying.  Another issue the original had was in the multiplayer, while eviscerating an opponent with a chainsaw your character became impervious to attack… not anymore.  Fixing these problems was a big step in the right direction for Epic and they continue to impress, especially with the multiplayer portion of the game.

No more 4 on 4 in the multiplayer, they have upped the ante to 5 on 5, it may not seem like much but it really adds to the relentless mayhem throughout the matches.  There is still deathmatch and team deathmatch but there have been a few more match types added.  The new take on some of the modes is out of the ordinary especially with Submission and Execution matches.

It is the Gears versus the Locust, and the hunt is on for the flag in Submission (the flag is some junky that cries out that he isn’t going back to rehab and he defends himself with a shotgun).  Having a moving and shooting “flag” makes for very fun times and is one of my favorites, the other is Execution.

Execution is very fun, when you gun down an opponent they do not instantly die, like I said previously, they begin crawling on the ground.  The target on the ground can either be revived by a teammate or Executed by their enemy using an execution maneuver as mentioned earlier.  Dying and killing gets to be pretty difficult when you have a competent team versus another competent team, matches can last awhile.  But the multiplayer portion of the game that takes the cake is easily the Horde mode.

Waves upon waves of the Locust come forth to put an end to the team that you have brought to the massacre in Horde Mode.  And that is exactly what the game consists of, straight up slaughter.  An ideal defensive post is needed in any of the “arenas” that the host decides to play in and teamwork is a must.  After each wave of enemies there is a brief chance to rearm and prepare for the next wave, which progressively gets harder.  Intense is a good way to describe the nature of this selection, and with the growing variety of enemies the game gets even crazier.

After searching painstakingly for reasons to deny this game of a perfect score I could not find any faults.  The game has too many good things going for it, not to mention it is by far the bloodiest game I have ever seen (reminds me of the halls of blood seen in the movie The Shinning).  So, if you are on the fence about adding Gears of War 2 to your stable of games, then drop what you are doing and run to the store to make this purchase, you will be happy you did.  This is by far the best game I have played on the Xbox 360 to date and I hope the saga never ends.

Was the first level as bad as everyone says it is?

I've heard that it's almost exactly like gears 1(in that level) but once you make it past that the game is great.
