UPDATE: I just noticed that the game page lists the release date as Winter 2009, but the press release says Spring so for now I'd say its safe to assume that it's just a typo on the game page.

Sega announced today that they plan to release a compilation disc of 40+ games for the Xbox 360 and PS3 titled Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection. It will feature the "best first party games from Sega's venerable 16-bit Genesis years as well as feature bonus content from the 8-bit Master system and 1980's arcade era games library".

The game is due to release in Spring 2009 for $30. If you're like me and you bought Sonic 1 & 2 on XBLA or PSN you're probably kicking yourself right now for not waiting. Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection will include over 40 games for, as previously stated, only $30. To put that into perspective, most Sega games on XBLA and PSN cost $5 each.

The collection is being developed by Backbone Entertainment. If you buy a lot of classic games(Sega games included) on XBLA or PSN you'll notice that Backbone Entertainment almost always had something to do with the port. So I would think that this collection will all have the same features(leaderboards,online play etc) as their digital counterparts.

Of course all the games will support 720p resolutions. There does not seem to be any online multiplayer options though. The official page on Sega's website only mentions local multiplayer. But this is still in the early stages so I wouldn't count online play out just yet.

Awesome news. Of course, I already downloaded Sonic 2 and Streets of Rage 2, so I feel somewhat stupid. I'm excited for this and that Namco collecton.
