Re: Nintendo 64

I think this was my first videogame system, my parents wouldn't buy me an SNES and I wasn't much into games anyways.

Re: Nintendo 64

First?  Wow...  Being that you're from Spain that probably means you got it last year.  (Just kidding.)  I was born when gaming started (1972 with the release of the Odyssey) but didn't own a console until my Mom bought an Intellivision 2 when we would visit her in California.  (She probably still has it)  Although we did own an Odyssey pong system when we lived in Michigan, my Dad returned it because the second player control was busted.  (I was like 4 and have a very weak memory of the event, just know that I was sad when it was broken.)

Re: Nintendo 64

I actully never owned a nintendo 64. Ive been thinking of going for one because of perfect dark and golden eye. i got into gaming when someone gave me a Apple IIe (it had galaxian and some other shit), shortly after that I was givin by the same person my first video game system, a sega master system. I think I was 6 or 7, not sure cause my memory on when things happened was always fuzzy.

Re: Nintendo 64

I'm currently in college and this console is still huge.  You walk around to different dorms and you see n64s everywhere including my house.  Mario Kart and Goldeneye still live on to this day.

Re: Nintendo 64

I remember I loved Mario 64, Pilot Wings, Star Wars Shadows of the Empire, Mario Kart, and Golden Eye.  It seemed like the longer it was out, the worse the games got and the less interested I became.

Re: Nintendo 64

It didn't help that the games were like $70 when the PS1 titles were $50.  And Nintendo released a game once every 4 months.  I always felt that the cartridge format was limited in some ways.  You couldn't get something like Final Fantasy VII on a cartridge and that kind of made it feel like it was less of a console.  Add to that the developers didn't want to take a risk by manufacturing a bunch of carts only to find that they didn't sell.  CD media was cheap.  It was just a mistake that Nintendo admits today but didn't back then.

Re: Nintendo 64

I still remember the Nintendo Power issue that showed a Space Shuttle (cartridge format) next to a Snail (CD rom format).  I guess they thought speed would win over storage space and cost.

Well they weren't completely wrong right? Good luck playing chrono trigger on the PS1. You can get a drink, pee it out, come back and it still wont be done loading.

Btw Kevin where the hell are you storing these consoles? That n64 is dirty. Wipe it off with a paper towel for gods sake!

Re: Nintendo 64

The problem with the load time argument was that the cartridges all had "Intro" screens, which was the N64 logo appearing, then the publisher splash, then the developer splash, and finally the game splash with the menu.  It took so damn long to get past the splash screens it felt just as long as the PS1 loading.

And the consoles are in lexons in a large storage area.  There are so many of them that cleaning them would take a month.  One day I might organize and clean them all for display purposes.  But this last go around was to perform inventory and move like-consoles into like-tubs.  I shot almost 120 consoles and that doesn't include the "Large" units, which are in an even larger storage area.  Those I'll get to eventually.

Re: Nintendo 64

Yeah, but I think the load time argument had to do with in game loading. Correct me if im wrong, but once you got into an N64 game there were no load times. Of course for most PS1 games the loading wasnt that bad so it wasnt a very good argument for supporting cartridges.

Re: Nintendo 64

i've been toying with the idea of picking up a n64 on ebay. mostly so i could take it to work and fire up starfox64 and play it with all the other pilots on our projector. that game was fun the last time i played it, but then again that was in freakin 1997... so it might be really tame and end up boring us after like 90 seconds... which is why i haven't picked up an n64 :)

Re: Nintendo 64

carts where great... so many gameboy games went through the wash, and who knows how shit and crap I dumped on my SNES... damn thing still works and the game are all stained and old looking but still work.

EBGames gives you the option to "protect your disc for a year" for an extra 2 bucks... I always do that, and have got free replacements for funky discs. disc media is cheaper for a reason, you gotta be really carefull.... either way, Kevin's collection boggles my mind.!
