that thing looks a little bit conformable... IMO, the most unconformable controllers are the NES controller and Sega Master System controller (but im supposed to love the SMS controller?!?!?!?) BTW, when was this thing released?

Re: Commodore CD32

Yes, the controllers are ass.  The CD32 was supposed to be the world's first 32bit console.  That distinction actually goes to the FM-Towns Marty which was only released in Japan and had a very limited run.  Not that the CD32 didn't have a limited run either, but it was sold worldwide.  So technically it was the "World's" first 32bit console.

Mine is working and I have a plethora of games and expansion items for it including the module that makes it into a full blown computer.  I also have all the CD32 Magazines with the demo discs.  Folks with a PS3 might know of a game called Super Stardust HD.  Super Stardust was originally a CD32 game.

This system was very popular in the UK just before the launch of the PS1 and Sega Saturn.  Commodore Intl went out of business before it officially launched in the United States and it was produced by Commodore UK until the end of the auction of Commodore's assetts (Which went to Gateway Computer) and then Commodore UK disolved.  And so did the CD32.

There were about 125 games made for it in total.  You could also turn it into a full blown Amiga computer and play Amiga games on it.

(I'll be posting up other stuff after the holiday.  Got too much going on at home.)

Re: Commodore CD32

It would be nice if the modern consoles came with modules to make them "full-blown computers"

The XBox 360 and PS3 are surely powerful enough to run current versions of Linux or Windows (linux on the PS3 probably and Winders on The Xbox since it isn't in MS's interests to promote linux).  I do know that the PS2 had some kind of Linux package but I never used it.  Heard it wasn't that great and u couldn't use the keyboard and mouse in games I guess.

Having a keyboard and mouse for input devices would make these consoles more attractive as gaming devices for me.  I really dislike using a control pad for most games.  FPS and RTS especially.  They work best with Mouse and Keyboard if you ask me.

Re: Commodore CD32

I guess "full blown" means you could make it an equal to a Commodore Amiga 1200 computer.  Same everything.  So it didn't have limitations like other consoles that could become computers.

The reason they don't make the 360 or PS3 real computers is because anyone could then develop software for them without paying Sony/Microsoft a license to do so. That's why they don't even like homebrew software.  Technically speaking, the PS3 is running Linux so it could be made to do whatever, and I'm sure the 360 has some sort of underlying Windows kernal.  You just won't be able to get at either due to the copy protection and encryption.

So the PS3 is being used to port Commodore games?

That's hilarious.

This is a cool looking system, I've never heard of it. That controller does look ass.

What's your favourite game from this system?

Re: Commodore CD32

Well, it had a lot of decent PC ports because the Amiga was still modern when it came out.  So there was a good version of Pirates, Frontier, Civilization, Alien Breed 3D, Roller Coaster Tycoon, and a host of stuff from Psygnosis and the Bitmap Brothers to name just a few.  Actually Psygnosis was bought by Sony as a PlayStation developer because of their work on the Amiga line of computers including the CD32.  Their last independent work was done for this console.

The best game is a pretty large RPG called Liberation.  (Captive II)  It took place in the future and involved some decent 3D for the time.  This was back in the day when the European developers made RPG titles.  For the most part they don't do that anymore.  They had really interesting story arcs.  It costs too much for a developer in, say, Hungary to develop a game today.  But back in the day it was cheap to produce titles for a console like this.

A lot of the stuff that was released on the Atari Jaguar were originally CD32 titles.  Zool, Soccer Kid, Pinball Fantasy, etc.  It was a major game system in the UK and at the time the UK had a lot of development companies.  Most games were designed for the Amiga, so they worked with a mouse or combination keyboard and 1 button Atari style joystick.  The gamepad had limited support.  It worked fine, but it was cheap and crappy.  I've used much worse though.

The CD32 was Commodore's second CD system.  They released the first, which was the CDTV.  I have one of those as well.  It will show up here eventually.  It's a larger system, so it's in a different storage area.
