I have the original NeoGeo Pocket as well, it'll show up in a later posting. The cartridge you see is the Japanese version of the B&W game. The Japanese got hard plastic cases where the American version (Which only came in Color) were in cardboard boxes. This is still one of the best handheld systems ever made and it's a shame SNK ran out of money.
I loved this handheld. It was awesome. I still have mine.
If I remeber right this came out around the same time as the Gameboy Color, which didn't help the sales on this system.
I wish they still made these games too.

It came out just before the Game Boy Advance. So SNK had little support and folks weren't much interested in it because they thought Nintendo was going to release something MAJOR. But as it turned out, the first edition of the Game Boy Advance was pretty crappy. It had no backlight, and that made playing action games on it difficult. The NGPC was a great system for fast action fighting games, and Card Fighters Clash was amazing.
Still, SNK figured they wouldn't have a market and ran out of money. Then there was some wierdness where they kinda went out of business, Aruze bought them, went out of business again, and then the employees who had left when Aruze bought them had formed Playmore. And Playmore bought SNK. So SNK Playmore was born, but it's really just SNK. Crazy.
Yeah I still have mine too. The Snk vs. Capcom fighting game is probably the best of that vs. Although Capcom vs SNK 2 is up there. So much depth and control with only 2 buttons. I still play it sometimes. An the card fighters clash is good. I don't have the Sonic game but I here its good too.
I finally bought one of these a few months ago (came with a bunch of games). I love Snk, so it's nice to play Metal Slug and the SD-versions of their fighting games. My only real gripe with this handheld is the severe limit on sprite colors; games will have awesome 2D backgrounds or title screens, but the character sprites can only have 4 colors maximum, which causes the games to look cruder than they should.
That's interesting. Didn't know about the color limit. But it may have something to do with the amount of frames that each sprite could have. Seems that's the reason the fighting games flowed better was that there were more animation frames than a regular handheld like the GBA.
Or I might be crazy. It was still fun.

The first time I ran into this I was a fool for not buying one. I was like 15ish and I walked into a Goodwill like I use to do to buy obsolete macintosh parts for my ageing macintosh performa 630cd (pre PPC mac). In the front they had 20 Neo geo pockets (new in original box) for $5 each and they came with sonic. I was semi interested, but then turned it down... never to see one again.
Im hoping one day to save some cash to get one with some KOF and other games that might interest me. I am not sure when I will though.

I wanted one when I was younger. Mobile Metal Slug? Awesome. What's the deal with Nintendo and backlights, it took them forever? How come we never got the Gameboy Light?
A friend of mine claimed he had all the Sonic games, he was so pissed when I told him about Sonc Pocket Adventure, he'd never heard of it.
Neo Turf Masters? That's one of the best games I've played on the NGPC! :)
Haha. yeah that's the one, please excuse my ignorance, it was one of the last games I got for it and I didn't play it much :) Match of the Millenium and Card Fighters are the two best games for the NGPC in my opinion, they're also my favourite portable games, fuck Pokemon. :P

ya, i bought my R4 and CycloDS for homebrew. then i couldnt stop my self from downloading DS roms, then i bought a easy flash and now i pirate GBA roms too. just say no, it will turn you to the dark side....
